Creating Workspaces Where Teams Thrive

We offer Complimentary Workshops Available Monthly!

Psychological safety remains a hot topic in workplaces, as it should. Creating safe, thriving workplaces is in everyone’s best interest. This article is not about regulations or laws, it’s about the benefits created for organisations, their leaders and teams.

We know that lack of trust is a large component of people’s decision to leave their workplace, and the huge cost of replacing that person and bringing them up to speed. Research shows that to thrive and be our most productive we need to belong, feel valued, seen and be able to contribute.

The benefits of creating a safe space for your teams to work in are extensive:

  • 88% increase productivity

  • 59% less turnover

  • 90% growth above average

  • 41% less absenteeism

  • Attraction of high performing talent

  • Better mental health and well being

  • Greater effectiveness and results

AND dare I say it …..FUN, enjoyment, satisfaction for achieving results!

Maya Angelou said,

“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better”.

The onus is on each of us to seek learning on how we can involve, engage and inspire our work colleagues to create productive and safe workplaces where diversity is embraced. This means building better workplace relationships and empowering people to do their best work.

In essence we need to SUPPORT CHALLENGE and CHAMPION our people if we want growth, innovation, accountability, decision making and results. People work hard for people they trust and respect and conversely ‘check out’ when they don’t feel engaged or valued.

As Amy Edmondson shares in her book “the fearless organisation”, if you are only hearing about progress rather than challenges, hearing statements rather than questions, agreements rather than debate, ‘fine, all is well’ and not requests for assistance or guidance. GET CURIOUS!

Over many years in learning and development I have often heard different versions of these comments -

“I tried to tell them. I saw it coming. They wouldn’t listen; I’ve stopped trying to make a difference”

As in life, complex work situations generate problems to solve, decisions to be made. Yes, we want our teams to be accountable. This can only happen when they are equipped to do their best work – resources, reasonable time frames, skills upgrade etc.

When did you prioritise time to check in with your team members and colleagues with curiosity to find what is working, and equally what is not?
